If You're Going a semi-formal dance as a return or something,
Nice Shirt Porter [such as a T-shirt-button]
Jeans and Nice.
If you really want to wear a tie .... go for it.
Technically, semi-formal means Tuxedo (Tuxedo). Dancing in the school, is the ramp down a notch, the equivalent of a business suit (not a blazer and tie: It is) a step too far.
Jacket and tie are usually semi-formal.
